Dargah Hazrat Nizamuddin Auliya
Introduction: Dargah Nizamuddin Auliya is situated in the Nizamuddin area of Delhi. This place was named after Sheikh Hazrat Nizamuddin Auliya who was one of the world’s most famous sufi saints. His grave and a hospice are situated inside the Dargah premises. Graves of many other famous personalities like poet Amir Khusro and Jahanara Begum (the eldest daughter of Emperor Shah Jahan ) are also located within the complex. Inayat Khan’s tomb is just around the corner. A Mosque is also there named Jamat Khana Mosque or known as Khilji Mosque. This Mosque is one of the oldest mosques in Delhi that continues to be worshiped till today.
Walls are decorated with jalis and roofs covered with domes. Devotees tie colorful threads to these Jalis with a belief that their wishes would be fulfilled. This spiritual place is visited every week by thousands of devotees including people from all religions. Special Qawwali programs are organised at Dargah every Thursday which offers divine peace and tranquility to the inner soul. The Qawwal sessions take place twice every Thursday, once at 4:30 pm and the other at 6:15 pm.
History: The real name of Nizamuddin Auliya was Muhammad Bin Ahmed Daniyal Al Bukhari. He was born as Muhammad in Badayun, Uttar Pradesh. At the age of 25, he came to Delhi and settled at Ghiyaspur and lived most of his life in Delhi until his death in 1325. He also shared a deeply intimate friendship with the poet Amir Khusro, who was buried in the same complex. Dargah was built in mid-14th century but the original tomb no longer exists. The structure you see today was built by a rich man named Fariduddin khan in 1562. The complex was decorated by Feroz Shah Tughlaq. Shah Jahan added marble arches and Jalis to beautify it. Jamat khana mosque was built by Khizr Khan, son of Alauddin Khilji.
